I'm the founder of FutureWork IQ where I spend my time assisting businesses to improve their climate literacy so as to understand the projected impacts from the expanding climate crisis and how to adapt their workplaces in the face of these impacts.

Because we understand the physics of climate change we have some very important choices to make.

The choices are clearly articulated by John Holdren:

“We basically have three choices: mitigation, adaptation and suffering. We’re going to do some of each. The question is what the mix is going to be. The more mitigation we do, the less adaptation will be required, and the less suffering there will be.”

That’s it basically.

Every leadership team is now at a point where they must decide what the mix will be for their business.

Just to be clear:

  1. Mitigation is all about preventing the global temperature equilibrium from going beyond 2°C (everyone plays a part in this — no exceptions)
  2. Adaptation is all about figuring out how we will be able to live in a world which is 0.2° or 0.7° warmer than it is now.
