This past week I had the opportunity to attend the GREF 2024 Climate Change and Environmental Management Indaba where I presented a shortened version of our climate literacy workshop

During this event, the Garden Route District Municipality’s Disaster Managment Team shared this piece of information regarding the last 4 years in the Garden Route

As you can see the region experienced infrastructure damage of nearly R1 Billion, almost all from extreme weather events.

There is a reason for this of course. South Africa has been steadily heating as you can see in the Berkeley Earth data below.

This heating trajectory is going to continue, which means the extreme events are going to continue and in most cases intensify.

This region like many others in South Africa is not immune to the impacts of the heating world.

Businesses and communities need to have urgent adaptation conversations in an attempt to limit loss and damage.
